Peridot, a yellowish-green stone called “the gem of the sun” by Egyptians, has been the long-standing birthstone of August. But there’s exciting news…it is now joined by spinel!
In their third update since the modern birthstone list was created in 1912, the Jewelers of America added this beauty to offer more choices and suit individual taste. Spinel rivals the rich red of a ruby, at a fraction of the cost. In fact, the discovery that spinel and ruby were two different gemstones brought about modern gemology!
Prior updates to the birthstone listing include alexandrite, zircon, citrine and tourmaline in 1952, as well as tanzanite in 2002.
